Edmond’s cell was damp and smelled rotten. The Jailer held a small lantern that allowed Edmond a glimpse of his cell. In his cell he had a table, a chair, a pail and a cot. A small blanket lay across the bottom of the cot.
Edmond stood in the cell, unable to move. He was confused by what had happened to him. One of the guards brought him some bread and some water but he could not eat. They left him alone and he sank to the floor.
The next day the guards found Edmond where they had left him. He lay on the floor and began to cry. He yelled at the guards through the door. He had committed no crime but had been sent to jail.
The jailer became worried when he realized that Edmond had not eaten yet. He was paid for every prisoner. If Edmond died, he would lose money. He tried to encourage Edmond to eat. He told Edmond that he might have a chance to appeal his case in a couple of years. Edmond did not know what he should do. He offered to pay the jailer to deliver some messages for him. He wanted to send a message to Villefort and one to Mercedes. The guard refused.
