As the cold winter weather settles in, many Chicagoans are warming up to the tried-and-true entertainment of board games.
As many American people use board games as a focal point for gatherings with friends and family, the classic games are still quite popular in the U.S. One in every three American homes has a copy of Scrabble Brand Crossword Game. The 54-year-old word game continues to sell between 1 million and 2 million sets annually in North America.
Monopoly, the quintessential American game, has a timeless appeal in that it offers players the opportunity to make their fortune. The game, developed in 1935, has been produced in at least 15 languages. To date, more than 480 million people worldwide have played the game. As evidence of the far-reaching appeal of Monopoly, in 1978, Neiman Marcus offered a$600, full-size, all-chocolate game. And in 1991, the Franklin Mint issued a collectible edition of Monopoly for $550 that included silver and gold pieces.
Others are studying the strategy of Clue, the classic whodunit game. Since 1949, players have been figuring out who did the murder, where it was committed and with what weapon. Clue is sold in more than 40 countries.
As the temperature continues to drop below freezing, homebound gamers will be stirring their hot chocolates and taking a turn rolling the dice.
