BOGOTA, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- Colombian President Alvaro Uribe said Wednesday that the nation's largest rebel group, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), were abusing the Venezuelan government's trust by talking peace while trying to kill state officials.
"We cannot condone these bandits for abusing the Humanitarian Accord and the trust of facilitators like Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez in order to play politics while acting as terrorists," Uribe said in a press conference.
The Humanitarian Accord is a proposed deal under which 50 hostages held by FARC would be exchanged for up to 500 of their fighters held by Colombian government forces.
Uribe spoke after rebel suspects were caught red handed planting explosives around the home of Angelino Garzon, governor of Valle de Cauca department.
After defusing the devices, soldiers clashed with rebels in fighting that left three soldiers dead. In a separate incident, authorities found more explosives around to the home of another Valle de Cauca official.
Uribe has authorized Chavez and a Colombian senator Piedad Cordoba to act as peace envoys. But he has added conditions since the two began their work in August: the FARC must commit to releasing hostages and must show proof that all the hostages are alive before the end of this year.
France and the United States are following the process closely. The 50 hostages include Ingrid Betancourt, a former Colombian presidential candidate who also has French nationality, and three U.S. military contractors.
