LOS ANGELES, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) on Thursday reiterated its opposition to doping, saying the credibility and values of the sport must be fully restored.
USOC Chairman Peter Ueberroth and Chief Executive Officer Jim Scherr issued a statement to this effect following the release of Mitchell Commission Report.
"The Mitchell Commission Report provides a comprehensive view of the extent to which the use of steroids, human growth hormone and other prohibited substances is tearing at the fabric of professional baseball," said the statement, e-mailed to Xinhua.
The USOC stands ready to assist Major League Baseball in attacking this problem by sharing with them all that the USOC has learned in implementing our own anti-doping program - which is independent, transparent and aggressive," the statement said.
"As disappointing as these findings are, this report could signal a turning point for professional baseball. This report could represent the beginning of a new era - an era during which the credibility and values of the sport are fully restored," said the statement.
While the attention today, understandably, is on the findings of the Mitchell Commission, it would be incorrect to view this as a problem that is unique to professional baseball, the statement said, adding that the use of illegal, performance-enhancing substances is a national problem that impacts every segment and level of sport in our society.
"Nothing less than a national response will ultimately solve this problem," the statement said. "We must reaffirm for the youth of our nation that the use of illegal substances is not a prerequisite for participation in sport."
