WASHINGTON, Dec. 20 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President George W. Bush congratulated Lee Myung-Bak on his election as President of South Korea and said he looked forward to establishing a good working relationship with him, the White House said Thursday.
In his telephone call to Lee, Bush invited him to visit Washington soon after his investiture and said he values the relationship between the United States and the Republic of Korea, U.S. National Security Council spokesman Gordon Johndroe said in a statement.
"The two leaders discussed their dedication to a nuclear-weapons-free Korean peninsula and the need to continue to show North Korea there is a better way forward if they live up to their commitments," said Johndroe.
The State Department's deputy spokesman Tom Casey said Wednesday that the United States and South Korea "have a number of important issues on our bilateral agenda, including our mutual cooperation in the six-party talks."
The Bush administration hopes the Democratic People's Republic of Korea will meet a December 31 deadline for fully disclosing its nuclear programs under a six-party deal. The six parties also involve Japan, China and Russia.
South Korea's National Election Commission announced on Wednesday that Lee Myung-bak of the conservative Grand National Party won the presidential elections.
