Tokyo shares open sharply lower

TOKYO, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks opened sharply lower Wednesday, dragging the benchmark Nikkei stock index almost 2 percent lower.
In the first 15 minutes of trading, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 276.88 points, or 1.98 percent, from Tuesday to 13,695.75.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange shed 36.58 points, or 2.71 percent, to 1,313.62. The Second Section was also lower.
