Parents ‘will lie’ to secure a good school spot
Up to a quarter of parents are prepared to lie about their address or religion to get their children into a good school, according to research published today.
Those desperate to get their children a better education give bogus addresses closer to the school gates and even claim to have found God to get into a top faith school. More than half of parents said they were also prepared to move house to secure a place at a decent comprehensive. Some couples even“separate”, with one parent and a child moving to a rented home near a school, only to "reconcile" after a place is secured. Others have attempted to bribe head teachers, offering to donate books, while others baptise children and send them to church every week even if they are unbelievers.
One head teacher went as far as employing a private detective to spy on parents suspected of lying. Norman Hoare, the headmaster of St George's School in Harpenden, Herts, went on early-morning and late-night stake-outs of flats and houses of applicants this year to see if they really lived where they claimed.
