原文：His mother died of difficult labor。
译文：1.他妈妈做苦工累死了。
2.他母亲劳累而死。
辨析：两种译法只是文体不同，都是错的，原因是误译了labor一词。“苦工”、“累活”的英文是hard labor。而此句中labor的意思是：“分娩，生产”，“生孩子”，difficult labor指“难产”，所以这句的正确译法是：他母亲死于难产。
英语词义灵活，翻译时常要取决于上下文。在不同的语境里，labor的译法大不一样，如：
1. Labor is the father of happiness.
勤劳是幸福之父。
2. He soon learned to do a new labor.
他很快学会了一个新的行当。
3. At last I woke him after much labor.
我费了好大的劲终于将他叫醒。
4. You can hear his labored breathing.
你能听到他费力的呼吸声。
5. Prices are much lower there because of the cheaper labor.
因为那里的劳动力便宜，所以价格要低得多。
